Five Year Strategic Plan Update
REGIONAL PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
To ascertain current conditions affecting the labor market, the
WIB deemed it necessary to contract with a consultant. With assistance
from an analyst at the New Jersey Department of Labor, the consultant
compiled the attached economic development information. This report
contains a brief history of the labor market in both Atlantic and
Cape May Counties plus market trends and a vision of the future
based upon existing development plans. Overall, this review does
not proffer any significant changes from previous studies. After
conducting an extensive inspection of the two Counties' labor markets,
it became readily clear that the hospitality industry continues
to dominate the landscape.
The attached regional economic development update (Attachment
A) includes an in-depth look at the state of the region's labor
market and provides insight as to what challenges the WIB faces
in the future. One task the WIB must continue to take on is balancing
employment opportunities between entry level and low-skilled retail
and hospitality sectors. Ultimately, some consideration must be
given to the possibility of altering the industrial mix of the
two Counties in order to raise the incomes of the regional workforce.
